Letters from Susan's Son, Cliff:
3rd letter from Cliff:
Dear Mom,
I need clear tape also. They said we can't use any other kind on letters. I still need the duct tape for use on my gear. I hope that is all I need including the other lists.
I am enclosing a Snickers bar wrapper from the area so you can enjoy the local jibberish and it's all I really have to send that might be interesting.
The cruel games are kicking in, so I think around the 1 month mark the s..t stirring will begin. I say this because last night someone poured water on K*****'s sleeping bag so that by the time he felt the water the ____ would be gone, he said he was freezing. Then today someone put hot sauce on T****'s lips while he was asleep. I don't know about K***** but T**** is planning on retaliating his revenge upon his suspects, guilty or not. Thus the cycle will begin. Just to be safe I will remind him. I know what you are thinking. No, I didn't mastermind the plots on them but to keep morale up I will ensure the game continues. If I'm lucky (which I'm not) maybe no one will bring me into the fun and I can coach from the sidelines. I'm like the bad guy from "Needful Things", except I boost morale. Now before you think about writing a reply to say that's not being logical, I reply:
- Nothing Marines do is logical
- We all have a "pleasure from others' discomfort" mentality
- It's interesting to see the creativity of mischief
- You raised me, so technically you are behind it all (it always comes down to "blame the mom", doesn't it?)
Today we got the day off from 1200 on through to the next day. It is the 15th but the letter will be mailed the 16th. I got your 1st letter and am waiting for the next.
Love,
Cliff
2nd set of letters from Cliff:
|
Hi Tracy,
I received two small letters from Cliff today
(2/28/03). He still has not received any letters from family (as of
Feb. 11th) so prepare yourselves for a bit of chastisement. In spite
of his not receiving letters he has not lost his sense of
humor. Cliff's words in red and my comments are in blue. Please
feel free to share and/or edit as you need.
Dear Mom,
It was good to talk to
you the other day (he is referring to the Feb. 9th
phone call).
How's the
weather?
I sure wish I could
write more but I haven't got any letters to refer to for conversation
material. Please tell Mrs. Beverly thanks. I sure enjoyed the
one letter I did get. G---n says his family loves him enough to send
letters. H----n said he hates his mom and she hates him. She
sent him a whole box. I had to stay up until 2 a.m. the other day to
call you. Then go do firewatch then sleep for 2 1/2 hours and go
back on post.
The days creep, then
the nights fly by if you're asleep. It is very flat here. It
is cold at night and mornings here. I forgot to tell you but H----n
does this thing where he impersonates the "Crocodile Hunter Steve
Irwin". He observes and narrates some of us as if we were animals in
the wild with his Aussie accent and a silly outfit always varying the
outfits. G----d was in his sleeping bag and H----n jumped on the
unsuspecting G----d and wrestled him giving us his narrative the whole
time. H----n is definitely good for morale. When I get some
bigger notebook paper (these two letters are written
on 5 1/2 by 3 1/2 paper) I can give you more details. Feel
free to share my letters with everyone.
Mom,
I forgot to mention
*electric shaver that takes AA batteries and a new
toothbrush.
We are allowed
(supposed) to get a shower once every 7 days or so. Today (Feb. 11th)
was our day, but the generator wasn't
running during our time 0500-0800 of course. They say from now on
anyone can go past 2200 but usually we are all in bed by then. Not
really a nightlife out here.
We are in the middle of
the desert living in tents which is better than we expected but hardly a
reason to stay up until 2200. The ground here is more packed down
than that in 29 Palms so we don't have to wade through loose sand.
Seems like the only
time I write home is when I want something or to b...h. I have
noticed that when you think you are in the worse place possible you go
some where that proves you wrong.
I sure was tired.
You may wonder why I didn't sleep earlier. I will tell you. I
got off post, guard post that is, waited for over 3 hours to use the phone
to call my mother, who I know missed me. I called just to let them
know I was ok and see how they were because out of all the letters I got
(zero by the way) none (my total) let me know how everyone was
doing. Well, I am partially incorrect. I did get one letter
from, not my mother, not my father, nor brother, nor aunt, not a single
member of my family but from Mrs. Beverly Taylor whom I have met only once
or twice. It is now the 11th of February 2003 and that letter
remains my only one. The lady that wrote me, and stated that I
didn't have to write her back because she would rather I spent my time
writing my family instead. The same family that has sent me no
letters at all. Please make sure to tell her I said
thanks.
Love,
Cliff
Bless You,
Susan |
First Letters from Cliff:
Tracy,
I received 2 letters from Cliff today. One was dated Feb. 1 and the other Feb. 5. Here are the high points:
Feb. 1st letter: "Needs: small flashlight with red lens, a 9 by 6 inch notebook, tactical duct tape green or tan or black, AA batteries (lots of them), lots of hand sanitizers and some baby wipes, beef jerky, corn nuts, Reeses Pieces. Good news b/c this place sucks We got our smallpox shots before we left. The first few days were slow right up the point before we hit the rack, then we would go do a working party..."
"Day 10, 11, 12 and even now the smallpox shot kicked in and made me sick, ache and drained. (My hooch mate) and I on the same night had a dream about our families and being home. That day was bad for that reason alone".
Feb.5th letter: "I am recovering from my shot... Watch CNN and the news, subtract the melodrama and you will know more than me..."
Susan
Tracy's Note: Hooch = Tent
