THE ROAD TO BAGHDAD, by LCpl. J. L. Jordan
This poem is the 3rd one written by my son LCpl. Justin L. Jordan. He is with Echo Co. 2/5 Weapons Platoon out of Camp Pendleton. Justin wrote this one after he came back from Iraq and had some time to adjust to the "Freedom" we live in and was able to reflect on his time at war. His thoughts are from the heart, just as his fighting for freedom was in Iraq. Semper-Fi; PamP.
THE ROAD TO BAGHDAD
There's times I've prayed, and times I've cried.
My family just wants me to come home alive.
These are the thoughts that swarm thru my mind.
My journey began with those papers I signed.
For me it was revenge, for the ones who were lost.
Protecting their loved ones, no matter the cost.
The time soon had come, a war I must fight.
Our nation deploys us, to rid our families of fright.
I joined the Marines to protect my family and friends.
To see 9/11 never happens again.
We're fighting a tyrant, a man named Saddam,
Who supported the attacks on our own front lawn.
As we push into Iraq, most of the enemy fled.
We pass Iraqi tanks, with the ground littered in dead.
We push toward the Capital. a city well known.
Not getting much sleep, as we post all alone.
You think of your family and friends who all cared.
Praying each night that our lives would be spared.
For the thoughts and the feelings my heart has now felt,
I now know there's nothing in life which cannot be dealt.
I know what it's like to feel the unknown.
To want nothing more than the safety of home.
Our journey has started, the end is unclear.
But I will tell you today, we fought with no fear.
We fought for the men, we've grown up to be,
Willing to die so our Country is free.
For my Brothers in arms who I fought along side,
I thank you my friends for we've made it alive.
