The Saturday morning air was cold, but filled with the excitement of the spirited Marine Corps Marathon crowd. As the 50 caliber starting gun booms, runners begin, taking almost half an hour to get across the starting line because of the size of the crowd! Some are dressed in Halloween costumes, but most proudly sport a patriotic look, carrying American flags and wearing military t-shirts. Among them are some of our own, our Team Marine Parents participants!

A popular workout stimulant has been pulled from the shelves after evidence from a study of its possible side effects was reviewed by the Department of Defense. As of December 7, the DOD prompted a medical hold on Dimethylamylamine (DMAA) products over a concern for troops’ safety.

The Hardee's franchise customers in Cleveland, J&S Restaurants Inc., came together to help Marines and families in a big way with a "Stars for Troops" fundraiser this year. The three week long campaign raised $11,638 at the Cleveland franchise, and over $1 million nationwide.

4-Year-Old Aedyn and His CPP Donations  4 Year Old Requests Care Package Donations Instead of Birthday Presents

A little boy named Aedyn decided that for his 4th birthday party, he wanted guests to bring care package donations for Marines overseas instead of birthday presents. He thought that they needed things more than he did, so his mom requested in the birthday invitation that guests pick items from our Care Packet Project™ needed items list instead of bringing presents for Aedyn. Sometimes the youngest of hearts can have the most generous of souls.

Physical Disability Board of Review  New Physical Disability Board of Review

Recently the Department of Defense Military Health System has implemented the Physical Disability Board of Review (PDBR) through a legislation of Congress "to ensure the accuracy and fairness of combined disability ratings of 20% or less assigned to service members who were discharged between September 11, 2001 and December 31, 2009."

Veterans Day Ceremony  Honor Our Fallen Veterans at the Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial

Honor our fallen heroes this year by witnessing the Veterans Day Ceremony at the Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial. The site, located about an hour south of Los Angeles, was dedicated on November 14, 2010, and is open to the public year round. It is the only memorial in the United States whose sole purpose is to recognize each and every one of our service men and women who have died in Afghanistan and Iraq. Their names are permanently engraved in granite so they can be remembered and revered by future generations.

The past two years, our Purple Heart Hero Support™ program was able to take several Wounded Warriors to a theme park called Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, California. Both years the Marines have had a great time and they still talk about the fun they had. Because the trip has been such a success two years in a row, Purple Heart Hero Support™ is taking the warriors to Knott's Berry Farm again this year on November 15th.

Sunday, September 25, 2011, marked the third year Marine Parents encouraged individuals and communities across the country to participate in the luminary initiative on the last Sunday of September in honor of Gold Star mothers. It was an even bigger success this year, and we thank all who participated by lighting luminaries outside of your homes and holding local ceremonies.

Just over two years ago, on September 8, 2009, Marine Sergeant Dakota Meyer traveled through a kill zone into the heaviest zone of fire in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, to aid wounded American Soldiers, Marines and Afghan National Army and Border Police forces.

Gold Star Mothers Day  You're Invited...Gold Star Mother's Day Ceremony in Columbia, Missouri

Marine Corps Virtual Museum  National Museum of the Marine Corps Launches Virtual Experience

The National Museum of the Marine Corps recently released an online "Virtual Experience" that allows web users to explore the sights and sounds of the museum right from their personal computer. Visitors can take a virtual walk through each gallery in the museum through the use of high-definition 360-degree panoramic photos.

Two years ago we began an initiative to promote the support of Gold Star mothers and families on National Gold Star Mother's Day, which is the last Sunday in September every year. We are continuing that initiative this year, and we encourage everyone to participate by displaying a Gold Star luminary on their front porch or driveway on the evening of September 25th.

Bridget Cantrell, Ph.D., will be participating in Marine Parents’ monthly online discussion on Thursday, July 14th, at 8 p.m. CST in the Marine Parents chat room. Dr. Cantrell has written several books on combat recovery, and she will be discussing post-traumatic stress disorder and warrior transitioning. Military members and families interested in knowing more about issues related to combat recovery are encouraged to participate in the chat.

Shiwdin Family  Marine Families Rally to Support Joplin Marine and his Family

On May 22, 2011, the tornado that ripped through Joplin, Missouri, destroyed cars, flattened buildings and in some cases took nearly everything that made a family’s house a home.

A Joplin Marine recruiter and his family of five were blessed to have survived the disaster when so many of the town’s residents had lost loved ones and friends, but when the storm finally subsided the family was left with nothing but their kitchen table, washer, dryer and a few family photos.

Social Media Security Issues  The Security Issues of Social Media

In the age of advanced technology and with the prevalence of social media, it is important now more than ever for military members and their loved ones to follow Operational Security guidelines. Many would be surprised to learn how easy it is for the enemy to use a service member's personal information to their advantage simply by accessing their Facebook or Twitter pages or the social networking pages of their loved ones. A new application for the iPhone called Bases was recently released, and it proves to be an excellent resource for military famillies.

According to its website, "Bases provides you with direct access to over 160 military bases in the United States. With Bases you can quickly call the base operator, visit the base website (if available) and find out which facilities the base offers."

Marine Week 2011  Get Ready for Marine Week 2011!

Marine Week will be held in St. Louis this year from June 20 to June 26.

According to the official page for Marine Week 2011, “The week-long celebration will showcase the unique characteristics of America’s Corps through more than two dozen events where attendees can watch combat demonstrations; climb aboard aircraft and ground equipment, to include helicopters, the V-22 Osprey and amphibious vehicle; and participate in community service projects alongside Marines.”

Clarification on Purple Heart Award  DoD Clarifies Standards for Purple Heart Award

On April 28 the Department of Defense (DoD) released a news article regarding the standards upon which a service member can receive a Purple Heart Medal for a traumatic barin injury.

Purple Heart awards have long been presented in the event of a brain or other concussive injury caused by enemy action or in action against the enemy, but there was uncertainty about presenting an award when the injury was not treated by a medical officer.

On our April 30th pack day our Care Packet Project™ coordinator asked me to help a Marine mom who wanted to pack a care package for her son, who was deploying that very morning from Hawaii. It was his first deployment, confirmed by the pained expression on his mother’s face. I told her she could pack the box with whatever content she found on our packing lines and offered to hold the box for her while she perused the items and placed them inside. She politely but firmly declined my offer, and I worried later that my offer had been somewhat insensitive, though that wasn’t my intent.

This morning we were both surprised and thrilled to learn that we were mentioned on the FOX program The O'Reilly Factor last night! A Marine mom named Kimberly emailed Bill O'Reilly asking for a shout-out to Marine Parents for funds to ship our Girl Scout Cookies to the Marines overseas. Her request was broadcasted on his show and it brought in donations for our campaign!

Tony Mena  Part Two of Tony Mena's Journey to Recovery

Last week we introduced you to Tony Mena, the combat veteran who is now an upcoming writer and music artist. Before spending six years as a Navy Corpsman aiding Marine Recon, Tony was a wrestler and not exactly a spokesperson for the arts or the military.

He didn’t have any family ties to the military; he joined partially because he needed a challenge. Though he was a successful athlete in high school, it wasn’t enough. Tony wanted to push himself to his limit physically, and the military was his outlet.

Tony Mena  Combat Veteran Tony Mena Shares His Story

We"d like to introduce the special guest you will be fortunate to hear speak at our April 30th luncheon at the Marine Parents corporate office in Columbia, Missouri. We discovered only recently that he lives right here in town!

Former Reconnaissance Marine Gerardo "Tony" Mena encourages us to see the world through his bright eyes in his recent singe, "I Felt the Earth Spin Today." After six years in the Marine Corps, Tony is now producing original indie/rock music and poetry. His poem "So I was a Coffin" won first prize in the Winning Writers 2010 War Poetry contest, and two of his singles are featured in the Nashville Review. The publication's editor said he was so moved by Tony's music that it made him cry.

In 2003, a group of neighbors in Irvine, CA came together to erect a temporary memorial for fallen heroes of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Several public ceremonies were held at the memorial from May to July 2003. The memorial was then taken down, rebuilt for a ceremony on September 11th, and dismantled again.

Finally, in 2010, the group of neighbors joined with the city of Irvine in assembling a permanent version of the nation's only memorial dedicated exclusively to listing the names of each fallen hero from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.

On Friday, May 27, 2011, in St. Louis, Missouri, the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, in conjunction with the St. Louis area fire departments and New York fire department, is holding a benefit concert to raise money to build quadriplegic Cpl. Todd Nicely a “smart” home.

We are collecting donations of baby wipes and toothbrushes to include in the care packages we'll assemble on our April 30th Pack Day. MOL Mass Communication  New Marine Online Mass Communication Solution

A new system called the Marine Online Mass Communication Solution was recently put in place for parent and family contact information to be conveniently accessed and utilized. This solution will increase efficiency of communication between commanders and Family Readiness Officers (FRO) and their Marines, spouses and families.

NRD  The National Resource Directory

A website created by the Defense, Labor and Veterans Affairs departments is proving to be an excellent starting point for wounded warriors, service members, veterans and their families seeking information and assistance. It aims to support the recovery, rehabilitation and community reintegration of service members.

The online directory, called the National Resource Directory, offers thousands of state, local and national resources for a vast amount of topics: employment, benefits and compensation, education and training, health and housing, among others.

On January 4, 2011, President Obama sign into law the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Improvements Act, otherwise known as the Post-9/11 GI Bill 2.0. This law contains several new provisions to help expand the benefits and coverage established under the original Post-9/11 GI Bill, which didn"t cover all veterans equally.

The Heart of a Marine Foundation is hosting the 2011 Hearts of Valor Ball on Saturday, February 12, 2011, in celebration of the United States Armed Forces, veterans and families.

The ball will be held at the Stonegate Conference and Banquet Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, and tickets are $85 per person.

On January 6th and 13th, a University of Missouri student organization called the Mizzou Black Men's Initiative volunteered in our Care Packet Project™ warehouse in preparation for our January 22nd pack day.

The organization's members gave themselves a goal of completing 200 service hours over their winter break, and Marine Parents was one of the organizations they wanted to help.

In September 2010 Julie, a mom on the Marine Parents message boards, posted an interesting request to other message board members: to help her rescue her son's company's dog.

Her son's squad was anticipating the end of their deployment, and they were worried about the fate of the huge Afghan wolfhound that had become the squad's protector.

The extreme care packages we have been talking about for weeks will actually be featured on the TV show Extreme Makeover Home Edition! ABC will be shooting footage of Marine Parents and the Care Packet Project™ assembling care packages in Beaufort, South Carolina in conjunction with the demolition and rebuilding of a home.

MotoMail, the site that allows family and friends of Marines deployed in Afghanistan to send their Marines electronic letters for free, now offers a two-way service.

Marines can send letters back to their loved ones in the U.S., who will receive the letter in as little as 24 hours.

Military members can write five free letters, and then they will cost 50 cents per letter.

It can sometimes be difficult for military spouses to pursue the training or education necessary for career advancement, but the National Military Family Association provides scholarships that help ease the financial limitations that are often present. The scholarships are available to spouses of all uniformed service members after completion of survey and essay questions and the presentation of a valid military ID.
