 PHHS Christmas Party 2012
Added December 26, 2012

ugly Christmas Sweater Contest

The Purple Heart Hero Support Christmas party for the wounded heroes in 29 Palms was a huge success. The wounded heroes and their families were all smiles, and the laughter could be heard throughout the room, and even out the door of the building. The set-up was great, and it gave the families a better chance to sit and talk to one another. The command from Camp Pendleton even made the trip up to help celebrate. They were extremely pleased with the set-up provided, and all that they have done. We are still new up here in 29 Palms, but so far there has already been a wonderful impact on these wounded heroes, and their families. We had 100 in attendance and we fed 80+. We had a great buffet of turkey, ham, stuffing, potatoes and gravy, green beans, cranberry sauce, and rolls. There were many wounded heroes made seconds and thirds so I can say it was a hit. We are excited to see what 2013 brings for this detachment, and can't wait to get started. Many thanks to all at who made this party a success, and a huge thank you to all the help from the Marines, and spouses that helped with the setting up. Without them it couldn't have been done.

Added December 12, 2012

After being paralyzed by wounds sustained during combat operations in Afghanistan, Corporal Tyler Huffman is grateful to be alive. What started as a small effort by the Ambassadors' Club at Jefferson City (MO) High School to help retrofit a home for Corporal Huffman eventually became Operation Tyler. Operation Tyler was a major community building project that resulted in a brand-new, accessible $500,000 smart home being built for Marine Tyler and his family with donated materials, labor and funding.

2012 Christmas Campaign for Wounded Heroes
Added December 4, 2012

MarineParents is raising funds for upcoming Christmas parties for Wounded Heroes in three locations on the west coast. We expect over 300 Marines and a similar number of family members to attend these events in Wounded Warrior Barracks at Camp Pendleton, Balboa, and Twentynine Palms, CA. MarineParents will spend $14,000 to provide holiday meals, desserts, a commemorative ornament, and $25 gift cards at each of these events. By donating, you can help provide a bit of Christmas cheer to injured troops who will spend their holidays in the hospital because of their service to our country. 100% of your donation will be used to support these events for our Wounded Heroes.

J&S Restaurants/Hardee’s “Stars for Heroes” program donates $10,000 to MarineParents
Added November 28, 2012, Inc. has received a check for $10,000 from J&S Restaurants, representing money donated during Hardee's spring 2012 "Stars for Heroes" fundraising drive.  Customers at participating Hardee's restaurants purchased paper stars by adding an extra dollar to their order. The walls of Hardee's restaurants nationwide soon became covered with stars.

J&S Restaurants is a family business with over 40 Hardee's franchises across Southeast Tennessee and Northeast Georgia. George Johnson opened the First Hardee’s restaurant in the area in the mid-1960’s with $8,000 in seed capital. From that modest start, George Johnson continued to grow his business until his death from cancer in 1996. Upon his death, he was mourned throughout his community for his inspirational and generous spirit. His civic mindedness now lives on through his children, Julia Scoggins and Mark Johnson, who have continued to operate the business under the banner of J&S Restaurants.

We would like to say thank you to J&S Restaurants, Hardee's, and all the individuals who helped make this outstanding donation to Marine Parents. The donation will be used in support of our troops through the MarineParents outreach programs Purple Heart Hero Support™, The Care Package Project™, and Operation Prayers and Letters™.

 Today’s the day!
Added November 7, 2012

On November 7, 2012, Marine Parents is taking more than 300 people, all injured troops and their family members, to Knott's Berry Farm. Buses from Wounded Warrior Battalion/Detachments in Camp Pendleton, Balboa, and Twentynine Palms are scheduled to rendezvous in the Knott's parking lot at 0900. This trip provides a well-deserved break for these troops during their difficult recoveries. And, it was made possible by the many MarineParents contributors who donated what they could to make this event a reality. Thank You!

MarineParents began taking Wounded Heroes on this excursion in 2009, when fewer than 10 troops made the trip. Since then, the program has grown dramatically. This year was the first in which family members made the trip along with their Marines. With lots of wives and children along, this year we needed four buses, 14 volunteers, and numerous drivers of private vehicles to successfully transport people from all over Southern California to Buena Park and back home again.

The forecast at Knott’s today is for sunny skies and 77 degrees, which should make for an excellent day for all. The plan is for everyone to ride rides all day, have a catered dinner in the park, and depart this evening at 1800 hours. We look forward to hearing an account from Volunteer Joyce, the guiding star for this event, about how everything went.

Check out the Commandant’s Reading List
Added November 2, 2012

On 5/14/12, James F. Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps, issued a revised Commandant’s Reading List. Books on this list are required reading for professional Marines who are serious about their careers and want to maximize their potential for advancement through the ranks. Also known as the Marine Corps professional reading program list, the list contains sets of books specific for each rank.

The list contains an interesting mix of titles. There are inspirational stories about Marines and troops from other branches of the military in conflicts from The Civil War to Afghanistan. There is the story of the inner workings of Army Special Forces training. There are books on history, and on developing effective leadership skills. And of course, there is Robert Heinlein’s SF classic about a battle between the forces of Earth and gigantic spiders from an alien planet.

Parents of Marine professionals who are interested in contributing to the advancement of their son’s or daughter’s careers should familiarize themselves with this book list. Copies of many of these books are available in the EGA store. Help your Marine advance by giving them one or more of these titles.
