The sunrise illuminates the island,
as I quickly run to the beat of a Marine Corps cadence,
toward the Carolina sunrise.
A runner’s high. Winding roads, I run alone. Inhaling and exhaling.
Each new run my muscles harden, my heart screams.
The intensity moves me with each beat.
A runner’s high. My feet grip the hot black asphalt
as I sing my solitary, motivating cadence in the Carolina sunrise.
I cross the finish line, just me and the sun.
