Dear Marine Families,

If this is the first edition of the MarineParents.com Newsletter you have received, WELCOME! If you are a returning reader we are glad you have joined us.

I want to take a moment to tell you thank you; thank you for supporting MarineParents, thank you for taking time out to support other families, and thank you for sharing your experiences with us! The Semper Family attitude is incredible, and without all of us supporting each other, our organization would not exist. Though my son has been out of the Corps for more than three years now, it's an honor to continue to be part of this family. Thank you!

Marine Corps Marathon: REGISTER!
You'll want to register early to participate 2009!

Marines running in the Marine Corps MarathonRegistration for the 34th annual Marine Corps Marathon opens on April 1st 2009. This event fills up very quickly and you will want to secure your spot, so be sure to register right away!

We are very excited to announce that three-time Purple Heart recipient Marine LCpl. John "Lucky" McClellan will run with Team Marine Parents™ this year. It will be his very first marathon and nothing short of a miracle considering all he has been through.

John was shot twice in the same arm within 1 week while deployed to Afghanistan. The third time, John was shot in the head by a sniper while deployed to Iraq. His doctors didn't expect him to survive much less thrive, but John exceeded everyone's expectations!

Next month he will run in his first half marathon, and then he will continue to train to run in the Marine Corps Marathon with Team Marine Parents™ on Sunday October 25th, 2009 in Arlington VA. We are honored to have him on our team and we hope you will join us.

Marines Volunteer in Hawaii
Friends for Life Animal Rescue Shelter

Marines in Hawaii Volunteer at Animal ShelterWAIANAE, Hawaii  -
Marines, civilians and family members from U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific volunteered their time to create a better, safer home for rescued animals at the Friends for Life Animal Rescue Shelter.

Friends for Life houses more than 50 animals at a time, including dogs, cats and even turkeys. The animals are rescued, restored to health and prepared for adoption into a loving family. To date, the shelter has found homes for approximately 300 animals.

Master Sgt. Heather discovered the shelter during her search for a dog several months ago. In the last few months, storms and flooding have caused significant damage to the shelter grounds.

Recruits Face The Crucible
A Final Test and Rite of Passage

yellow footprintsThe Crucible is a test every recruit must go through to become a Marine. It tests every recruit physically, mentally and morally and is the defining moment in recruit training.

The Crucible takes place over 54-hours and includes food and sleep deprivation and over 45 miles of marching. The entire Crucible event pits teams of recruits against a barrage of day and night events requiring every recruit to work together to solve problems, overcome obstacles and help each other along the way.

The obstacles they face range from long marches, combat assault courses, the leadership reaction course, and the team-building warrior stations. Each Warrior Station is named for a Marine hero whose actions epitomize the values the USMC wants recruits to adopt.

MarineParents.com, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) public charity. MarineParents.com, Inc. was founded in January, 2003 in response to parents' needs to find information and to have a Place to Connect & Share™ with one another during deployments. Our free online services and connections have expanded to support and educate Marine moms & dads, spouses, families and friends and we'll be offering our 5th Conference in San Diego in April, 2009. We've helped over 40,000 Marine and recruit families during bootcamp, training, active duty and deployments. We've shipped thousands of care packages overseas to our Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan, sent thousands of prayers and letters to injured Marines and served hundreds of lunches to families caring for their Marines at Bethesda Hospital.
