Gold Star Mother's Day Success
Check out how others participated!
On September 26th, individuals, neighborhoods and cities across the country united in honoring Gold Star Mothers. More awareness was created about Gold Star Mother's Day this year, and it shows in the participation we have seen. Many of our volunteers displayed their Gold Star Luminaries outside and shared their significance with their neighbors. Other Marine families set up beautiful luminary displays and posted pictures on Facebook. We are so glad that more people are getting involved in honoring Gold Star Mothers, and we'd like to share with you how others recognized this important day.

Insurance Advice for Military Members and Families
Know Which Questions to Ask
According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, knowing how to handle insurance plans and coverage during deployments can sometimes be difficult.
Military members should talk to their insurance agents and see if they offer any specialized plans that consider their needs. Be sure to ask your agent specific questions about how insurance renewals and premium payments are handled while deployed.

Extension on Stop Loss Special Pay
Submit Forms by December 3rd
The Department of Defense has stated that all service members, veterans and beneficiaries are eligible for compensation if their service had been involuntarily extended under Stop Loss between September 11, 2001 and September 30, 2009.
The original deadline to submit a claim in order to receive the benefit was October 21, 2010, but the DoD recently extended the deadline to December 3, 2010, per a resolution signed by President Obama that provides funding for federal government operations through that date.
Those eligible for Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay should apply as soon as possible to avoid increased processing time. Visit www.defense.gov/stoploss for more information and to apply.

A Marine Mom Shares Her Thanks
Family and Friends Spotlight
We like to share emails and letters that we receive from family and friends of Marines because it gives them a chance to have their voices and experiences heard. We recently received an uplifting email and beautiful pictures from a Marine mom whose son recently returned home from Afghanistan:
Just wanted to let you know that our son [name omitted] and his platoon have safely returned from their deployment in southern Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.....and are back on US soil!!!
A big thank you goes out to you and all your staff at Marine Parents for the care packages that you sent to our son and his men while his unit was deployed in southern Afghanistan. Our son reported that all of his men returned safely home. He said that care packages from Marine Parents contained the right items at the right times, and they were a real morale booster during deployment.

The Marine Corps Identity Cause
Let's Fight for Equal Recognition
You may have heard of the bill that was passed in the House of Representatives in May 2010 to rename the Department of the Navy to the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps.
Many, including Marine Parents, believe that the Marine Corps is entitled to its own identity. The Corps currently remains under the Navy's administration, and bill S.504, the companion bill to the bill passed in the House, aims to change this.
S.504 is being debated in the Senate and has 79 co-sponsors, but it faces oppostion from Armed Services Committee leaders.
The Senate needs as many members as possible to co-sponsor this bill to help it pass, and that's where you come in. Contact your senator if he or she is not already a co-sponsor, and encourage them to join the cause.
