1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment (1/3)
"Fortes, Fortuna, Juvat (Fortune Favors the Brave)~~Lava Dogs"
3rd Marine Division ~ 3rd Marine Regiment
Bases and Stations: Marine Corps Base Hawaii
The nickname of 1st Battalion, 3d Marines is the “Lava Dogs.” Its origin lies in the combination of the USMC nickname “Devil Dogs” and “Lava,” the foundation of the Hawaiian Islands, specifically Oahu, where 1st Battalion, 3d Marines calls home.
The Battalion deploys to the Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) on the Big Island of Hawaii several times annually to conduct their most rigorous and severe training. The area is constituted of sharp and jagged pumice stone in many different shapes, sizes, and compositions which are called “Lava Dogs.” The Marines of 1st battalion, 3d Marines have had their combat boots and bodies chewed often by these lava dogs throughout the years. However, while operating in the shadow of Mauna Kea, this did not deter them from their mission.
The Devil Dogs of 1st Battalion, 3d Marines are sharp and rabid as are the lava dogs of PTA; they both are vicious in the attack and a formidable obstacle in the defense. Also, like the lava dogs of PTA, the Lava Dogs of 1st Battalion, 3d Marines will be around for a long, long time.

Marine Family Readiness: Under Commandant Conway's guidance, the Marine Corps Family Readiness program has undergone some changes in 2008. Every battalion has a FRO (Family Readiness Officer) who is responsible for providing information to spouses, parents and family members of our deployed Marines. The KV or Key Volunteer program is being phased out.
FRO Structure: The primary source of unit/battalion information for spouses AND parents is the FRO and Unit Hotline. The FRO will work with FR Assistants, FR Advisors and FR Volunteers along with the senior command members to make up the new Family Readiness Command Team.
Optional Parent Network: As part of the Family Readiness Program, each Marine Corps unit can opt to form a Parent Network (PN) for Marine Corps families as well. We'll provide information for the PN on this Unit Information Page™ (UIP) with approval from the unit's FRO only.
